Challenged to design a museum exhibition on anything, my partner Hope and I decided to celebrate our mutual love of sushi and Japanese culture.

AN INTERATIVE EXHIBITION

The exhibition also features a seafood aquarium, fresh sushi bar, and a live sushi theater; where guests will be able to enjoy their sushi while watching a live feed of the chefs expertly crafting rolls at the bar. Guests are able to choose from 10 unique rolls at the sushi bar, then rate their favorite sushi rolls on their way out of the exhibition.

We were inspired by traditional Japanese design throughout our exhibition branding, and wanted the exhibit to honor Japanese culture at every turn. We chose to use an organic color palette, paper textures, Japanese characters, and natural building materials to reflect the classic Japanese style.

Itadakimasu Exhibition Admission Ticket

This is where guests will enter the exhibition. Giant sushi decorate the wooden curved walls.

Itadakimasu Exhibition Staff Lanyard & Tag

This stand is where guests will receive their Itadakimasu wooden box, containing their menu/rating card, foam sushi game pieces, and a set of limited addition chopsticks.

This timeline can be viewed on the left hand wall when guests first enter the exhibition. It shares the history of where sushi began, and how it has evolved over hundreds of years to present day. The timeline is a screen with an animation; as the guest triggers the floor panel at the beginning of the timeline, the sushi’s roll along to guide the guest through.

This interactive game can be played by guests with foam sushi pieces and their own wooden chopsticks found in the gift-box. A puzzle game is around the next corner, challenging guests to master their chopstick skills.

THE CHOPSTICK CHALLENGE

‘The Chopstick Challenge” - An introduction to the interactive exhibition game with foam sushi pieces and chopsticks.

Four podiums, each with four different sides, are filled with different sized spots to fit in the foam sushi pieces and have guests practice their chopstick skills.

‘You Lost Me at Chopsticks’ - A poster displayed near the Chopstick Challenge podiums to teach guests how to hold and use their chopsticks correctly.

THE ROLLS

These posters are displayed in the exhibition between the entrance pathway and the sushi bar, so guests can learn about the rolls and ingredients before they order their favorites to taste.

SEAFOOD INGREDIENTS

The posters feature the four types of seafood used in the exhibition’s sushi rolls; king crab, albacore tuna, shrimp, and salmon. Walk around the twelve foot aquarium to learn about the history, taste, and birthplace of these creatures, while observing them swim around the tank.

VEGGIES & OTHER INGREDIENTS

The posters feature the other ingredients found in our Itadakimasu sushi rolls. Learn about these flavorful ingredients before choosing which rolls to try from the sushi bar. Each ingredient’s poster tells the location where it’s grown and sourced, unique flavor profile, and rich history.

These essential sides cleanse the palette and add spicy flavor to sushi rolls.

ITADAKIMASU SUSHI BAR

At the back of the exhibition, guests will find a large natural wood sushi bar, filled with skilled sushi chefs and Itadakimasu staff. After choosing which rolls they’d like to sample off the menu, guests give this ticket to the staff behind the bar to place their order and receive their sushi!

SUSHI THEATER

Sit on the oversized maki cushions and watch the sushi masters at work while they chop, slice, and roll sushi to perfection. Guests are encouraged to pick up their sushi to snack on before heading to the theater to relax and socialize. Itadakimasu!

GUESTS CAN SIT IN THE THEATER & WATCH THE MASTERS AT WORK WHILE ENJOYING THEIR SUSHI.

Near the exit of the exhibition, guests can rate their favorite sushi rolls and give their feedback! The menu given in the original Itadakimasu wooden giftbox has a perforated strip, where each roll can be rated one to five stars.

Tear off this slip and feed it into the machine to watch the different sushi rolls are rated in real time, Rollin’ Up the Charts!

Itadakimasu: The Art of Sushi Making, was intended to launch in the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) in Brooklyn, NYC. This museum features other interactive, cultural food exhibitions.

THE BOOK

A 6” x 9” book was designed to introduce the exhibition. This book details the venue, background, and purpose of the exhibition, as well as all parts of the exhibition, collateral, advertising, the color palette, materials, and typefaces.
